Through The Darkness Comes The Light
The rich vibrant colors within my current work
are, in many cases, contained within the darkness that seems to envelope it.
Cars, streetlights, and city lights pushing their way through the darkness as
you pass them; lights sitting on a hill while the reflections meditate upon the
water.
The inspiration and development for this body of
work has been a long, painful, and consuming process. From the beginning I have
always been motivated by the color richness, attention to detail, and movement
of my pieces. Comic books were the first of my teachers in art when it came to
the use of color and the visual movement of images in a sequence to tell a
story. I have been trying to bridge the gap between my self-taught drawing and
mixed media techniques with my academically learned formal training. The only
way to do this was to go beyond my comfort zone in painting. I practiced in
classical style, impressionism, abstract and then managed to push past the
rigid, detail oriented illustrative style that I always fell back to. I then
managed to marry theses techniques together in a more fluid manner.
The darkness at night contrasted by the pressing
lights on my way to work gave me some sense of peace on my way to work my
graveyard shift. The perils of riding a moped in the rain that late at night, in
the biting cold, seemed more bearable with every flash of blinding light
reflecting off the raindrops on my visor. The hollow suffocation of darkness was
kissed by every beam of light. This is only a fraction of the pieces to come.
The sheer number and size are a representation of the weight I felt every
passing night as I worked the graveyard shift and slept in the day like some
feral creature. Yet within the dark there is still a light shining.
These pieces have been an
expression of the weight I felt, a means of venting these feelings, and a means
of self-exploration in new techniques. More importantly they illustrate the
healing process. Not only have I dwelled in the darkness of a situation, but I
have discovered the light of determination in pursuit of my aspirations and with
it a healthier mind, body, and life. There is more within a landscape than the
frame of darkness surrounding it.
